Ad-hoc networks consist of multiple, interconnected devices that are also acting as routers. The devices may be moving thus forming a network topology that is constantly changing. Ad-hoc networks are an ``infrastructureless'' technology usually associated with military and emergency applications. Interest in the field has recently increased because of its enormous commercial possibilities.
ADHOC-NOW is an international conference on AD-HOC Networks and Wireless and was held at the Fields Instritute in Toronto, September 20-21, 2002. Its purpose was to create a collaborative forum between mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers for collaborative research in the emerging field of ad-hoc networks. Scope of the conference was research in the areas of architectures, access control and discovery, multicasting protocols, performance, quality-of-service, routing protocols, scalability, secure services, and self-configuration.
Twenty-one papers were submitted of which fifteen were selected for regular presentations and three for short presentations. The program committee consisted of G. Alonso, M. Barbeau, C. Bettstetter, M. Devetsikiotis, P. Dini, A. Galis, N. Georganas, T. Gray, J. Janssen, M. Just, E. Kranakis, D. Krizanc, T. Kunz, J. Lambadaris, R. Liscano, A. Menezes, L. Narayanan, S. Rajsbaum, F. Saffre, I. Stoimenovic, and T. Todd.
We would like to thank the invited speakers: Anthony Ephremides, Ramiro Liscano, Lata Narayanan, and Charles Perkins for their presentations and the program committee for refereeing the submissions, Many thanks to Alison Conway, Jen Hall, Sonia Houle, Gerardo Reynaga, and Cindy Sawchuk for helping with the conference logistics. Special thanks go to Bradd Hart, the Fields Institute and MITACS (Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems) for supporting the conference financially, and the School of Computer Science of Carleton University for their use of computing facilities.
